Book Review: Miles from Nowhere

July 6, 2011 by Julie 7 Comments

Good morning!!  By the time you read this post, I’ll be flying from Wichita to Charlotte, NC to spend a week visiting friends.  I hope this 6:20 am flight was a good idea.  :/

Since I’m flying miles to somewhere, I thought it was fitting to review the book, Miles from Nowhere, by Nami Mun.

This book was another random purchase from a closing Borders store back in January.  I bought a bunch of books marked down to $0.50.  I had not heard of most of the books or authors, but for such a steal I went with it.  Well so far, I’ve read 3 books from the purchase and have enjoyed all three!

Miles from Nowhere is the story of Joon, a Korean living in the Bronx in the 1980’s.  At the age of 12, her father leaves Joon and her mother.  Her mother does not take it well, coupled with her mental problems.  Joon decided to leave home and turn to the streets of NYC.  The book follows Joon from age 12-18.

This book gets pretty dark.  It’s not a happy-go-lucky, girl finds happiness in a guy to take care of her story.  Joon has a hard life and falls into drug and worse.  I read this book in only 3 days though.  It was sort of the equivalent of a car crash.  I couldn’t look away/quit reading even though I knew I woudn’t like what I saw/read.

At the heart of the book, you know that Joon is a good person.  I found myself hoping that with each chapter she’d turn things around!  The drawback is the ending of the book.  It doesn’t tie everything up in a bow.  The ending leaves it to the reader to decide.  That didn’t necessarily bother me, but it was a bit anti-climatic.

Miles from Nowhere:  3.75 stars out of 5

Have a great vacation, the weather is probably cooler than it is here in Texas! Sounds like that book is interesting, I will need to look into that. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you!! It is cooler a bit too…less humid. Although, being in Kansas I’m used to a ton of humidity! :/
